I was crossing the upper Delaware River last winter when the jagged ice was rushing down stream and treacherous. I thought about the sheer willpower of the starving and frozen soldiers who crossed the Delaware on Christmas night 1776 with George Washington. As with all wars, even the victors lose something in the end. -Heidi
Lyrics
Black water in the Delaware
Tangled ice and frigid air
Starving men row hard and strong
On the prayers of Washington
Freedom Rings Oh
Cannon balls and shattered glass
Patriots surprise attack
Battle cries on Christmas night
Victory whets appetites
Freedom Rings Oh
Wiping blood off the floor
Wash away the signs of war
Guns that brought them to terms
Sons and men who won’t return
Freedom Rings Freedom Rings Independence Independence, Day Freedom Rings
