Mullica River

(Heidi Winzinger)
Heidi Winzinger
The Mullica River runs through the New Jersey Pine Barrens and is one of the most scenic and unique places in the world. The iron, glass and cedar wood industries are gone, but the folklore and history remain. I love reading about New Jersey history and life deep in the Pines. The shipbuilding industry is one of those lost once the railroads and coal mining came along, but if you are floating down the Mullica River today (which I recommend!) you can imagine the thriving life gone by and see remnants of the shipyards dotting the banks. -Heidi
Baptized in cedar water
A way of life
Preaching and ship building
Deep in the pines
God left his mark
Here at the Forks

I’m floating down
The Mullica River Oh, Oh, Oh
With a hold full of glass and iron
And a heart filled with love Oh, Oh, Oh

Long planks of white cedar
Stacked in the yard
Lamp black and Turpentine
Color my kin
The flood tide signs
Time to untie the lines

I’m floating down
The Mullica River Oh, Oh, Oh
With a hold full of glass and iron
And a heart filled with love Oh, Oh, Oh

And when the journey long
I pray to return
May the wind bring me home

I’m floating down
The Mullica River Oh, Oh, Oh
With a hold full of glass and iron
And a heart filled with love Oh, Oh, Oh
